The Posse is made up of both Reserve Deputy Sheriffs and Equestrian Civilian Volunteers.
The requirements for Reserve Deputy Sheriff’s who are part of the Posse are the same as for other Reserve Deputies.

Mounted Reserve Deputies must have access to a trail horse, serviceable trailer and towing vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Mounted Posse functions as an integrated support unit to the Department in situations requiring the expertise of trained horse riders. They assist in searches in areas not accessible by motor vehicles and provide patrol of parks, riverbeds, shopping center parking lots, and rural mountain areas

“OUR TRAIL RIDES CAN BE A REAL ADVENTURE”

The Mounted Posse has a long tradition with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department since the first Sheriff took office in 1850. During the mid twentieth century the annual Sheriff’s Rodeo held at the Los Angeles Coliseum was a huge event that drew thousands of spectators.
