How To Join Us

STEP 1. Meet all of our requirements:

To qualify for the position of Deputy Explorer, you must:

  • have at least a "C" average in high school,
  • be between the ages of 15 and 21 years of age, and,
  • be of good moral character without any serious arrest record.

Deputy Explorers must meet the same basic physical requirements as a Deputy Sheriff.

  • The next step in the selection process involves a passing grade on an oral interview and a medical examination.

Physical Requirements:
Applicants for Deputy Explorer and other arduous positions must meet the following physical standards:

  • Vision: Correctable to 20/30 in each eye.
  • Color Vision: Anything other than minor hue impairment is disqualifying.

Hearing: There must be no greater than a 25 dB loss in the better ear as averaged over the test frequencies of 500, 1,000, 2,000, and 3,000 Hz. There may not be a peak loss at any of the test frequencies greater than 30 dB at 500 Hz.

STEP 2. To start the process, YOU MUST contact the Explorer Coordinator at your local Sheriff's Station:

If you decide you want to become a Law Enforcement Explorer, and you feel that you meet the minimum qualifications, please contact the Explorer Advisor at any of the Sheriff's Stations located throughout the County, and listed below. You need not live in an area policed entirely by the Sheriff's Department to become a member of the Explorer Program.
