County of Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department sponsors one of the largest Explorer Programs in the United States. There are presently 20 different Explorer Posts in the La County Search and Rescue, and over 600 explorers. The primary purpose of the program is to provide, through actual experience, a means by which young men and women may determine if they would like to pursue a career in law enforcement.
La County Sheriff Reserve is one of the largest and most diverse counties in the entire Nation. The Sheriff’s Department has taken great strides to truly connect with the residents of Los Angeles County and provide them with the tradition of service that we proudly proclaim.
Since its inception in 1969, the County of Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department‘s Law Enforcement Explorer Program has created new inroads of understanding between youth, law enforcement, and the general citizenry. Deputy Explorers are not just “talkers.” They receive extensive training and then actively participate in community affairs and non-hazardous law enforcement activities.

The Sheriff’s Mounted Posse has existed since the Department’s inception in 1850. LASD reserve During the 1940’s the Posse continued to grow and was made up of Reserve Deputies. Up to the mid 1970’s the Posse maintained more than 500 Reserves.
La County Sheriff Reserve are utilized to supplement the LASD Sheriff Department‘s law enforcement manpower. Like the Full-time Deputies, Reserve Deputies are professionally trained and duly sworn law enforcement personnel. Since LASD Reserve Forces Bureau have the same powers of arrest as Full-time Deputies they are required by law to meet the same hiring, background, medical and psychological standards as Full-time Deputies.

Reserve Forces Bureau is the administrative headquarters for the Department’s Reserve Program, Explorer Program, Mounted Programs, and Sheriff’s Advisory Councils. With over 800 La County Sheriff Reserve and 600 Explorers, the Sheriff’s Department has a wealth of resources that augment the various units on a daily basis.
